The Duchess of Cambridge privately met a terminally-ill boy and his parents today, it has been revealed.

She also joined in with art and music classes at a new children's facility in Ipswich, displaying the kind of up-close personal affection that earned Diana the title Princess of Hearts.

The Duchess, the royal patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices, was in Ipswich to launch the organisation's new Treehouse facility where dozens of youngsters are cared for by dedicated staff.

The charity's chief executive Graham Butland said Kate had met with the terminally-ill child and his parents in private.

Mr Butland would not name the couple or the illness their three-year-old son was suffering from, but said the actions of the duchess would mean a lot to them.

#Treehouseappeal in Prime Ministers Question Time

"Dr Thérèse Coffey (Suffolk Coastal) (Con): Will my right hon. Friend join me in congratulating the people of Suffolk, who, in less than a year, have raised more than £3 million to build a new children's hospice through the Treehouse appeal? This is an example of the community coming together to support a local project that will really make a difference. It is also supported by BBC Suffolk, the Evening Star and the East Anglian Daily Times .

The Prime Minister: My hon. Friend is absolutely right. I know that Members right across the House back the hospice movement, with its hospices for adults and for children. The Government have put extra money into hospices, but that is a great example of the big society, where people come together and make sure that there is real provision to look after those who need it most."
